Émile Faguet, (1847-1916) was a member of the French Academy, a literary historian, and Catholic traditionalist. His Cult of Incompetence is an criticism of the leveling effects on democracy and egalitarianism and the essential relation to the decline of quality across society. He praises the instinctive pursuits of excellence of the aristocratic classes in contrast to the political flattery of the incapable.
